Living microorganisms have been associated with beneficial effects on gut health, and recent scientific investigations highlighted the use of probiotics in several target applications as gut-skin or gut brain axis, cardiometabolic prevention and even oral care.
The incidence of oral care disease in Europe is high, with an estimated 90% of adults having some form of periodontal disease. This is a serious public health problem, as oral health is closely linked to overall health and well-being. Probiotics can support oral care by their antimicrobial action, reducing the amount of harmful bacteria, and their anti-inflammatory activity, by boosting the immune system. Some specific oral health benefits linked to probiotics include reducing plaque and gingivitis, improving periodontitis, reducing bad breath, and reducing cavities [1].
In this context Gumtastic has been characterized by two specific probiotic strain, selected as the best performing thanks to their strong antimicrobial activity shown against two main oral pathogens involved in tooth decay and periodontitis: S. mutans and A. actinomycetemcomitans.
Several in-vitro assays have been carried out to understand Gumtastic’s mechanism of action. Antimicrobial assay evaluating probiotic activity both in a preventive and treatment models have shown that L. plantarum PBS067 and L. paracasei LPC114 were truly effective before and after pathogens infection. Furthermore, a more complex model involving dentin substrate has shown that the metabolites produced by L. paracasei LPC114 significantly lower the viability of A. actinomycetemcomitans. Moreover, SEM pictures reported that the two probiotic strains strongly reduce the presence of pathogens after an overnight incubation.
Gumtastic, thanks to its lower dosage of 2B CFU/day (1B CFU/strain), can be delivered in various forms, from capsules to orosoluble forms, according to customer needs.
