During the 7th Microbiome and Probiotics R&D Business Collaboration Forum, gynaecologist Franco Vicariotto gave a lecture on The Rationale of Probiotics in Urogenital Female Healthcare and After Pregnancy in which he discussed the several fields of application of probiotics in gynaecology: the treatment of vaginal infections, the fight against antibiotic resistance, the health of the newborn, the prevention of postpartum depression and many more.
Vicariotto and his research group have also published a clinical study on three specific strains – Lactobacillus plantarum PBS067, Lactobacillus rhamnosus LRH020 and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BL050 – demonstrating their efficacy against bacterial vaginosis relapses. Moreover, in a randomized double-blind controlled clinical trial the same group is now evaluating the efficacy of Lactobacillus reuteri PBS072 and Bifidobacterium breve BB077 against anxiety and depression, with promising preliminary data.
