The conversation about health has, for several decades now, been conducted at the wrong address. One begins, almost invariably, with the human body: the gut, the immune system, the microbiome we carry within us. That conversation is necessary. It is also incomplete in a way that has significant consequences. Because the microbiome residing in the human intestine did not arrive there by accident. It was seeded, shaped, and continuously nourished by something that preceded it in the biological chain, something we have been degrading systematically since the middle of the twentieth century.
The first mile of health is not inside the body. It is under one’s feet.
Soil is not dirt. It is the most complex living ecosystem on the planet, and we have spent seventy years treating it as a substrate for industrial chemistry.
A teaspoon of healthy soil contains more microorganisms than there are human beings on Earth. The measure of what is at stake is in that number. The microbial diversity of the soil determines the microbial diversity of the plant grown within it, which determines, in substantial measure, the microbial diversity of the gut that consumes it.
The gut communicates with the immune system, with the brain, with the metabolic architecture that governs whether inflammation becomes chronic or resolves. One may follow the thread as far back as one wishes. It leads, always, to the ground.
Industrial agriculture did not arrive at the destruction of this ecosystem through carelessness. It pursued that destruction with method, because the logic of yield optimisation at scale required the elimination of biological complexity. Synthetic nitrogen displaced microbial nitrogen fixation because it was cheaper and more predictable. Fungicides eliminated the mycorrhizal networks that had connected plants to soil communities for millennia, because yield figures improved in the short term and no one was measuring what was lost. Glyphosate disrupts the shikimate pathway: a metabolic route absent in mammals, which provided the basis for the safety claim. It is present in every microorganism in the soil and in the gut. The implication were not asked about with anything resembling adequate urgency. One did not simply change how food is grown. One changed what food is made of, at the level of the biological signals it carries. And then one expressed surprise that the chronic diseases of inflammation and metabolic dysfunction declined to follow the expected trajectory.
The evidence is not, at this point, a matter of serious scientific controversy. Comparative studies of soil microbial diversity on organically managed versus conventionally managed land reveal differences that are categorical rather than marginal. Regenerative agricultural practices, among them cover cropping, reduced tillage, compost application, and the withdrawal of broad-spectrum biocides, restore soil microbiome complexity within years rather than decades. When that diversity is restored, the secondary metabolite profiles of the plants grown in that soil change in ways that are measurable and relevant: the polyphenols, the flavonoids, the compounds that nourish the keystone species of the human gut, return. The food becomes, in a biological sense, different food.
What the science has not yet produced, and what is urgently required, is the policy conclusion that follows logically from these findings.
If the soil microbiome is the first link in a chain that terminates in human health, then agricultural policy is health policy.
Pesticide regulation is health policy. The subsidy structures that reward yield measured in tonnes per hectare while ignoring every biological variable that cannot be entered into a commodity price index are health policy. We have not governed any of these as such.
We have governed them as instruments of industrial production, of trade, of rural employment, of food security defined exclusively as caloric sufficiency. Agriculture ministries and health ministries do not, as a general rule, speak to one another in a language of shared accountability. That structural silence has a price. We are paying it, though we have not yet had the honesty to present the bill.
The confrontation the science now makes difficult to postpone is this: we have been subsidising, with public money, the systematic degradation of the biological infrastructure upon which human health depends. Not through malice. Through a model of agricultural productivity that counted what was convenient to count and declined to measure what was not. The cost of that omission is now distributed across health systems overwhelmed by chronic disease, across populations presenting with autoimmune conditions that barely existed as clinical categories sixty years ago, across a gut microbiome diversity deficit that correlates, in study after study, with the adoption of industrialised food systems.
The transition to regenerative practice is not a sentimental attachment to pre-industrial farming. It is a public health intervention with a body of supporting evidence that is growing faster than the political will to act upon it. Soil carbon sequestration receives political attention because of its relationship to climate. Soil biodiversity deserves equivalent attention because of its relationship to chronic disease. The evidence base is comparable in quality. The urgency is, if anything, more immediate. The gap between the two in terms of institutional response is not a reflection of the science. It is a reflection of who has organised to defend the status quo and who has not yet organised to challenge it.
The first mile of health begins in the ground. It moves through root systems into the plant, from the plant into the food chain, from the food chain into the gut, and from the gut into every system in the human body that depends on microbial signals to function as it evolved to function. Four hundred million years of biological architecture, encoded into a chain between earth and body. The repair of that chain is not a complicated undertaking. It requires, above all, that we cease to pretend the chain begins somewhere other than where it does.
One cannot resolve, through medicine, what was broken in agriculture. One cannot prescribe one’s way out of a degraded food chain. Fix the source. The institution capable of governing that repair at the scale required remains, as I have argued elsewhere, yet to be built.
