In anticipation of the 10th International Congress of Probiotics, Prebiotics and Postbiotics in Pediatrics (Lecce (Italy) April 16-18 2026) we interviewed Professor Roberto Berni Canani, pediatrician at the University of Naples Federico II, for a preview of the key topics he will present. His current research focuses on the growing global burden of allergic diseases—now the most common chronic, non-communicable conditions in children and increasingly prevalent in the general population.
Professor Berni Canani highlights the central role of the gut microbiome in the development of allergies and emphasizes the importance of identifying and modulating environmental factors—such as diet, antibiotics, and microbial components—that shape microbiome function and structure. His team is actively investigating the therapeutic potential of postbiotics, particularly in promoting immune tolerance and preventing or reversing allergic responses.
Cutting-edge clinical data, especially in the context of cow’s milk protein allergy, will be shared at the congress, showcasing promising strategies for reshaping pediatric allergy management through targeted microbiome interventions.
